Our Oldham Healthy Minds team have joined forces with the University of Sheffield, to offer a patient preference trial for some of their patients with anxiety.
The trial, which will be running for approximately 24 months, gives patients a chance to choose which guided self-help treatment they'd like to receive.
The patients can choose between the traditional cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) guided self-help, which concentrates on their present day difficulties and changing their thoughts and behaviour, or cognitive analytical therapy (CAT) guided self-help, which focuses on past experiences and relationship patterns that may be affecting their behaviour now.
This trial follows on from research which shows that people being treated for anxiety and depression regularly drop out of their guided self-help therapy due to the traditional CBT treatment not always suiting them, and other treatment options not being available.
During the trial, our Healthy Minds team will be monitoring whether the extra choice of treatment leads to an increase in the number of people who complete their self-help therapy. They will also be recording how the different treatments impact on their patient’s anxiety.
The trial is due to finish in 2020, and we'll be sharing the results once the trial has ended.
