If you’re interested in an exciting career in the NHS, we can offer you a taste of what it’s like.

Not only do we offer work experience in a range of clinical roles* (such as nursing or therapies), we can also offer you opportunities in lots of areas you might not immediately link with the NHS.

This includes maintenance roles (such as an electrician or plumber), information technology, finance and more.

Whatever work you’re interested in, our expert staff will support you every step of the way and help to develop your experience and knowledge.

* Clinical placements are only available to people aged 16 years and above (18 years and above for mental health).

Types of work experience

These are suitable for people aged 14 years and above.

You will spend around half a day with us and, although you won’t have any contact with patients, it will give you a good idea of what to expect from the role or service you’re interested in.

You will be supervised at all times.

These are suitable for people aged 14 years and above for non-patient facing areas and aged 16 years and above for patient facing areas. You must be at least 18 years old for a placement on our mental health services.

This type of placement usually lasts up to five days; however this can be extended to 10 days in certain circumstances and depending on availability.

Our shadow placements allow you to further develop your knowledge about the role or service you’re interested in, including the types of day-to-day tasks involved.

You will be supervised at all times.

This type of placement is suitable for people aged 16 years and above (18 years for mental health services) and is usually delivered in partnership with education providers (e.g. schools, colleges and universities).

Work placements usually take place over an extended period and can last for anything between two weeks and a year.

They will provide you with in-depth knowledge about the role or service you are interested in.

Before starting on any of the above you will be required to complete all of our relevant pre-employment checks. This could be as simple as an ID check. We will give you more information about these checks once your placement has been agreed.

The sector-based work academy offers talented jobseekers a hands-on insight into life here at Pennine Care. It has quickly become popular with our teams.

With tailored training, a six week placement, and application and interview support, the academy is a fantastic opportunity to prepare people for a career in the NHS.

Many of our graduates have gone on to work for us, for another NHS organisation, or to start a further education programme.
