Arden Ward (Stockport)

We are a 24-bedded adult acute in-patient ward for males between the ages of 18-65.

You will have your own bedrooms with washing/toilet facilities. We provide 24 hour assessment, care and treatment for a variety of mental health needs.

This could be due to experiencing a deterioration in your mental health, a relapse of a mental health illness or at times of crisis (relating to mental health issues).

Our team is made up of many different health professionals, including nursing staff, medical staff, a psychologist, occupational therapists, and a recovery and inclusion worker.

Visiting

When visits are allowed (based on current local covid restrictions), we are very flexible with visiting times. However, we do ask that you try to avoid visiting during protected mealtimes, which are:

  • Breakfast – 8-9.30am
  • Lunch – 11.30am-1pm
  • Evening meal – 4.30-6pm

We would also encourage visitors to leave by 8pm to allow patients to begin their night routines.

If your visit will need to coincide with these times, please speak to the nurse in charge.

We offer a variety of treatment and interventions including:

  • Medication,
  • Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT),
  • One-to-one support from a named nurse, to plan and evaluate your care (including discharge planning)
  • Physical health screening
  • A programme of ward based activities

These activities enable you to build on current skills, learn new skills and can be a distraction from symptoms, as well as a sociable experience.

We also offer an occupational therapy (OT) service. The OT works with you to assess how mental illness impacts on your ability to function in your everyday occupations and roles. They will help to maximise your independence, recover and prevent you being re-admitted to hospital.

Recovery and inclusion workers offer you support to access the community, which could involve home visits to sort out important issues or engage in meaningful community activities. They also run group activities on the ward.

After you've been assessed, you may also be referred to a psychologist. They will visit the ward to work around you and our staff, to help you find different ways of managing the difficulties you're facing. Sometimes this might include attending a brief group to build your skills in managing difficult thoughts and feelings.

We also offer housing and advocacy drop-in sessions on the ward.
