Aderonke Apata

Aderonke Apata.jpg"I am a voice for the BAME communities and want to build upon the NHS' strategies of reaching and engaging with refugees and people seeking asylum.

I am a refugee, human rights activist, feminist and LGBT equality advocate, with a BSc in microbiology and subsequently a masters of public health and primary care. I am an experienced registered manager in adult social care and studied graduate diploma in law and currently studying a bar practice training course.

I am the founder of African Rainbow Family, a registered charity that supports LGBT+ people seeking asylum. I also founded Manchester Migrant Solidarity, a self-help group offering practical supports for migrants through building a powerful solidarity with non-migrants. I contributed to various UK All Party Parliamentary Group inquiries to influence many decision and policy changes.

As a lesbian refugee with severe and enduring mental health issues, I believe that it is important for the NHS to better work with the wider BAME and asylum seeking communities. I bring my experience of gaining the trust of the hard to reach and marginalised people into the role. Be a voice for the communities of migrants, people seeking asylum and the BAME who are not migrants; including LGBT+ people. Through this, I can help support the NHS strategies and achieve its future goals.

My skills of management and strategic leadership would be helpful to drive meaningful change. My legal background would mean bringing objectivity.

I like to learn from other people and widen my horizon too."
